the Machine in the Garden has remastered our 2002 album, Asphodel, which is now available for digital download on our Bandcamp page.

As a bonus, we have included two additional tracks, "Open (Reimagined)" and "Ghost (Reimagined)". Using the original source material from 2002, these two tracks have been reworked with a 2020 mindset and mixing techniques.

John Stinson, who has previously mastered Shadow Puppets, XV, Before and After the Storm, and Places in Between for us, did a wonderful job bringing the same level of his sonic expertise to this album as he did with our previous releases.

For the audio nerds: 24-bit files were uploaded exclusively to Bandcamp, so for the best quality choose a lossless file format for download.

the Machine in the Garden's ninth studio album and our first in nine years, Places in Between, is now available for digital download on our Bandcamp page. We are also accepting pre-orders for the physical CD and various combos including a CD with a t-shirt and/or a handwritten lyrics sheet.

Thirteen new songs explore the variety of styles—from goth rock to electronic ethereal—the band is known for.

Musically, Places in Between draws from the band's own unique musical past. Roger describes the sound as "the electronics and looping structure of Shadow Puppets, the darkness of Asphodel, and epic elements of Before and After the Storm. I wasn't trying to emulate anyone or anything else; I just constructed what felt natural. It's different and should feel new yet familiar to our fans."

Like previous works, the themes explored by the lyrics are wide-ranging and include references from mythology of world cultures (like in "A Thousand Years of War" and "Prophetic Bird"), themes from popular culture ("Courage, Power, and Wisdom") as well as references to current events and challenges we face in the world ("Broken Days" and "Resist"). No matter the topic, Bowman's lyrics and vocal delivery are full of emotion and depth and her voice shines through clear and full in every track.

Places in Between has everything fans have come to appreciate about the band in their nearly 30 year history, while still sounding elevated and modern.

Places in Between will initially be a digital-only release on the Machine in the Garden's Bandcamp page on July 10, 2020, followed soon after by digital release on the iTunes Music Store, Amazon mp3 and others (via CDBaby). Places in Between will also be released in the near future as a limited-edition CD available directly from the band.

Many of these songs were exclusive to their compilations and therefore elusive to our fans, and most were previously unavailable digitally. We're glad that we were able to collect these songs in a single location for everyone to enjoy.

Earlier this month our long-time partnership with Middle Pillar Presents ended.

Our relationship with Middle Pillar began in 1998 with the distribution of “Underworld” and continued with a track on their first compilation as a label, 1998’s “What is Eternal?” Shortly thereafter, we were the first band signed to the label leading to the release of four studio albums between 1999 and 2005, as well as appearances on various compilations.

What this means is that all the Machine in the Garden recordings for Middle Pillar are back under our control. With this change, we’ve made all four of these albums available on our Bandcamp page: “One Winter’s Night…,” “Out of the Mists,” “Asphodel” and “Shadow Puppets.” We’ve done our best to include all original artwork and, in some cases, promotional materials for all of these releases in PDF format as downloadable extras. The Middle Pillar versions of the digital releases will soon be removed from Amazon MP3 and iTunes, but we will be reposting the albums ourselves shortly thereafter.

We intend to provide the best pricing available for our releases. Most of our albums are now $8 for either the physical or digital versions — or in the case of Bandcamp, immediate digital download with the physical purchase — and for US addresses we’re offering free shipping for the physical discs.

We thank Middle Pillar for these fruitful years together.

Official Announcement for Before and After the Storm

the Machine in the Garden and Deus ex Musica are proud to present Before and After the Storm, the band’s eighth studio album.

The eight new songs encompass the variety of styles — from goth rock to electronic ethereal — the band is known for. tMitG also tapped some of their favorite artists for three remixes on the album: Frances Byrne (Wench – www.wenchmusic.net), Falling You (www.fallingyou.com) and Miles Fender (Earth Calling Angela, Charlottesville – www.streetlightfarm.com).

The name “Before and After the Storm” has several different meanings for the band, but ultimately it has to do with the interweaving of music and events from different times in life and how much even a single event can change that life. This is evident from the selection of songs, some of which have their roots in music begun many years ago combined with more recent creations.

This time differential is also evident in the influences for the songs, says Roger, “I wanted to draw heavily from old-school/classic groups in the genre — get back to some “goth” roots — Swans, The Sisters of Mercy and Joy Division for example, but at the same time evolve those sounds into something current. But also newer artists such as Sarah Fimm and Emmalee Crane also played influential roles on other songs. Ultimately it came out sounding like tMitG, which is the point, really.”

Lyrically many of the songs also follow a theme, says Summer, “I looked to mythology and mysticism when I was writing the lyrics for these songs. I wanted to think about other cultures and their origin stories as a mirror of returning to many of our musical roots with this work.”

Before and After the Storm will initially be a digital-only release on the Machine in the Garden’s Bandcamp page tmitg.bandcamp.com on Friday, 24 June 2011, followed soon after by digital release on the iTunes Music Store, Amazon mp3 and others (via CDBaby). Before and After the Storm will also be released in the near future as a very limited, special-edition CD available directly from the band.

Happy New Year from the Machine in the Garden! 2005 was a fabulous year for us. We started the year by finishing our sixth album, Shadow Puppets, which was released in April with great critical success.

What's in store for 2006? While the Machine in the Garden takes a break, Summer has been busy in the studio. For her debut in electronica music, Summer performs guest vocals for a track on the new The Synthetic Dream Foundation album, Tendrils of Pretty. You can listen to a clip of the song entitled "Auf dem See" at the Mythical Records website. Summer is also working with Dru Allen on the next Mirabilis release. Dru and Summer have completed several songs and are very exciting about the direction of their next work.

The new album, entitled Shadow Puppets, is set for release on Middle Pillar Presents in mid-April, 2005. For more information and sound samples, click the album cover.

We are also pleased to announce a limited CD-R re-release of Underworld. When we originally pressed the album, we had a large overrage of bookets and traycards. We have a limited number of burned CD-Rs with on-CD inkjet printing, packaged in a jewel case with the original art. Additional information is available on the Underworld page and can be purchased for $10 plus shipping.

The Machine in the Garden is performing at Convergence 11 in San Diego! Convergence is April 22-24 and tickets are on sale for $65 through April 1 (after this, the ticket price increases to $75).

The Mirabilis 7" EP is out and Pleiades should be out by the end of the month. Check Mirabilis' releases page for more information. These items are available for order now from Middle Pillar and will soon be available from tMitG as well.

A new Middle Pillar compilation Eclectica 2 is now available from Middle Pillar. It includes a new tMitG song "Suspend" and a remix of Mirabilis' "In the Dark" by Roger.

Some of you may have noticed that mp3.com is gone. We've updated the web pages to reflect this, so there's some song samples that are no longer available and also the two When Angels Peer Favorably Upon Us (1 & 2) collections are now no longer available. We're considering a small CDR run of a Best Of When Angels Peer... If you're interested, let us know.

The 10th Anniversary/Christmas Holiday Sale on Veils and Shadows EP is done, but we've lowered the normal price to $6. Please buy one.

Asphodel is here! We also have a brand new site design to coincide with the release. As with our other releases, Asphodel is available from us directly, our label, Middle Pillar, Amazon.com, Projekt/darkwave and fine independent music stores around the globe. Asphodel will be distributed in the United States by Middle Pillar, Projekt, Soleilmoon and Metropolis. Distribution in Europe is through Audioglobe.

We're also looking to do some select live dates this summer in support of Asphodel. If you would like to book us to play at your club/in your city, please contact us.

GothCon

GothCon this last weekend was a blast and we really enjoyed playing. It was great to meet all of the very nice people there. We are definitely very honored we were able to be part of such an incredible event for a great cause. Thanks to everyone who came and supported us. Check the images page to see some photos that were taken.
We have new t-shirts available! Those of you who came to New Orleans saw the new design. We have now made them available for order here. The design features a purple tulip with silver text. The t-shirts are all black and we have regular short-sleeve styles as well as baby-dolls and long sleeve tees.

We have finished recording Asphodel and we are very happy with it. It is set for release late May. Be sure you are on the mailing list so you can be informed when it is available for order.

CD cover art and title

We have officially released the cover art and the title for our fifth release. Due out late spring on Middle Pillar Presents, Asphodel will feature new original tracks plus a cover of Depeche Mode's Photographic (which we have performed live in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco - did you recognize it?). The artwork features all original photography by Donna Clancy-Goertz. To view the cover art, visit the Asphodel page (more information including a track listing coming soon).
